Wednesday, sorted

Wednesday is the one that catches everybody out. Whether you're filling a whole day or scrambling to cover 11:30 onwards depends entirely on what year your child is in, so start there.

Which Wednesday are you having?

1P to 4P. No school at all.

The whole day is yours to fill. Mornings are the bit most parents forget to plan, and they're quieter than the afternoon rush.

5P to 8P. Out at 11:30.

Morning only, and there's no canteen and no parascolaire on a Wednesday. Somebody has to collect them, and they'll be hungry.

If you're working

48 Wednesday activities run seven hours or more, which is the only thing that actually solves the problem if nobody's free at 11:30. Most are camps and day programmes rather than hour-long classes, and they tend to book up a term ahead.

Plenty more run for half a day. If you only need the afternoon covered, there's far more choice and much less pressure to book early.

Mornings are underused

106 activities start before noon on a Wednesday. If your child is in 1P to 4P, that's the half of the day most families leave empty, and it's noticeably easier to get a place.

It also means you're not negotiating a whole afternoon after a whole morning.

If your family is bilingual

Wednesday is when the language schools run, and it's how a lot of families keep a second language going without giving up a weekend.

Italian at Communes-Ecole in Collonge-Bellerive. Spanish through the Spanish embassy in Lancy. English clubs and full day camps at Key English School and Bell.

Where

Most of it is in town, but it reaches further than parents expect. Lancy, Meyrin, Thônex and Collonge-Bellerive all have a proper Wednesday offering, and there's usually something within a walk, a cycle, or one bus of wherever you are.
