Geneva

Free, and we mean free

Not everything worth doing costs a fortune. These are the activities in Geneva that cost nothing at all, with no membership, no trial that turns into a subscription, and no sign-up wall.

It's mostly making things

78 of the 111 are arts: museum workshops, ceramics sessions, drawing ateliers, craft mornings. That's not a coincidence. Museums and municipalities fund this kind of thing, and clubs charging subscriptions don't.

Everything else is thin by comparison: 9 in science and technology, 8 musical, 8 sporting.

Turn up rather than sign up

69 of these are one-off events, not term courses. Which means the way to use this page is not to plan a year, it's to check it when a Saturday opens up.

There are 27 ongoing free classes as well, and those do fill, so they're worth chasing early in the term.

Carouge is doing something right

Genève has 59 of the 111, which you'd expect. Carouge has 31, which you would not, given its size. Its municipal cultural programme is unusually generous and worth knowing about wherever you live in the canton.

What free means here

No fee, no membership, no first-session-free-then-pay. If something needs booking, we say so on the listing. If it turns out not to be free, tell us and we'll fix it the same week.

Free for parents on ChooChoo is not a tier. It's the whole thing.

Answers

The things parents actually ask

What free activities are there for children in Geneva?

111 across 10 communes. 78 of them are arts, mostly museum workshops and municipal ateliers.

Are they really free, or free the first time?

Really free. No fee, no membership, no trial that converts. If something needs booking we say so on the listing.

Which communes have the most free activities?

Genève has 59 and Carouge has 31, which is remarkable for its size. Then Plan-les-Ouates with 7.

Can we just turn up?

Usually. 69 of the 111 are one-off events rather than courses you enrol in.

Is there anything free for teenagers?

8 of these take 13 and over, and we are adding Geneva's free youth centre programmes as we reach them.
