Dance, and more of it than ballet

Ballet is the backbone, but there is far more range here than most parents expect. The catch is that dance is concentrated: it is the least spread-out category we list.

Concentrated in town

Genève holds 143 of the 340 activities. Vernier has 53, Plan-les-Ouates 31 and Versoix 26 activities.

17 communes, second smallest of the 6 we cover. If you are outside the city, check what is in Genève before assuming there is nothing near you. This is the category where a short trip in is most likely to be worth it.

Ballet, then a lot else

Ballet is the largest group, taught across several schools and at the Conservatoire. Then Latin and ballroom, hip-hop, tap, Afro and world dance, and jazz.

There are also parent-and-child options that parents rarely find on their own, including family dance workshops and éveil classes for the youngest.

Éveil comes before ballet

17 activities take a child under four and 87 take four to six. Creative movement and éveil classes are the entry point, and they start earlier than ballet proper, which usually wants a child who can follow a sequence.

It rewards showing up

325 of the 340 are ongoing classes, with almost nothing to try as a one-off. And 3 are free.

If either of those is a problem, arts has both the one-offs and the free.

Where to ask

The schools behind most of it include École de ballet de Vladimir Ippolitov, Ecole de Danse de Genève, Elodie Dance Studio, Association Kitoko, Association Yata Dans' and Salsa Style Genève, plus municipal programmes in Lancy and Plan-les-Ouates.
